How to be a Good Grief Friend

February 20, 2025 @ 1:00 pm 2:00 pm

A free presentation by Mickey Kivitz, M.S. and Director of Education for The Grief Center of New Mexico.

After the death of a loved one, surviving relatives, friends and community members seek to comfort the bereaved. At the same time, it is commonly reported that people are unsure of what to say and how to approach conversations about dying, death and grief.

In this training, you will learn useful communication strategies for speaking with grieving individuals, including the benefits of being an active listener, what can be helpful – and not helpful – to say to and ask the bereaved, and common misconceptions about grief. Since grief is a normal response to the death of a loved one, it is important to recognize how death and loss impact us all. Learning how to talk about grief is a skill worth practicing.
