About OMI

The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) investigates any reportable death occurring
in the State of New Mexico that is sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected, or where a
person is found dead and the cause of death is unknown. The OMI determines the
cause and manner of death in these cases, and provides formal death certification. To

OMI is committed to serving the families of New Mexico with dignity and sensitivity. The
utmost respect and attention to detail is given to each case OMI receives. 

The OMI provides counseling and support services to the families they serve. This
support is provided in collaboration with the Grief Resource Center and other trained
specialists statewide.
